The Slave Catcher Case in Bristol

On August 21, 1847. Kentucky slave-catchers seized Tom Harris in the middle of the night in the home of Samuel Judson in Bristol. A local justice-of-the-peace ruled against the slave-catchers. The circuit court in Goshen did, too. On appeal to the Indiana Supreme Court, the slave-catchers were vindicated, on the basis of the Fugitive Slave Act.

Meanwhile, Tom had escaped. Judson had gone West on the Gold Rush. And the slave-catchers had returned to Kentucky. Miller’s research paper includes verbatim transcripts of testimony in court.
